2009 Chateau Haut-Batailley from Chateau Haut-Batailley, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Amid the myriad of fine vintages emanating from the illustrious vineyards of Bordeaux, there exists a particular vintage that beckons with a siren song of maturity and refinement—the 2009 Chateau Haut-Batailley from Chateau Haut-Batailley. A year that played kind favour to the winemakers of Pauillac, the 2009 season bestowed upon its grapes an affable climate which resulted in a truly notable production.

A Vintage Defined by Climactic Benevolence

The 2009 vintage enjoyed a remarkable growing season, proffering near-idyllic conditions. A dry but mild winter led to an early budburst, while a warm spring brought about flawless flowering. The summer soared with ample sunshine but refrained from excess, preventing the grapes from wilting and instead allowing them to bask in the golden warmth that so defines their concentrated flavours. It is within this environment that 2009 Chateau Haut-Batailley flourished—a beacon of a grape’s perfect journey from vine to bottle.

The Quintessence of Pauillac Elegance

This extraordinary vintage articulates itself with poised elegance, offering a palate replete with cassis, interwoven with hints of dark cherry and subtle oak nuances. Firm tannins are elegantly dressed in layers of complex aromatic development. Investment-wise, such a vintage stands out as a compelling addition to any enthusiast's portfolio, propelling the 2009 Chateau Haut-Batailley into an enviable position in terms of both pleasure and fiscal sagacity.

Time has graciously kissed this wine, assuring its evolution towards remarkable balance and textural finesse. On the table or in the cellar, this 2009 stands as a testament to what is achievable when nature and vigneron work in sublime harmony—a treasure of Pauillac that promises both current pleasure and future reward.

In summary, for those looking to embellish their collections with a wine that epitomises the heights achievable by great Bordeaux Vintages, the 2009 Chateau Haut-Batailley is without doubt one of the most distinguished choices—one which continues to capture the imaginations of collectors and casual connoisseurs alike.

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2009 Haut Batailley has a much tighter and less expressive bouquet than many 2009s at the moment (in fact, you might think this was a 2010 if served blind!). Fortunately it only takes a few swirls to reveal some gorgeous minerally blackberry, bilberry and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a more structured 2009 Pauillac than others, yet beautifully balanced and with plenty of fruit towards the precise finish. This feels like a very polished Haut-Batailleynot in the winery, rather by nature. Tasted July 2016.
