2000 Forts de Latour

By Chateau Latour

2000 Forts de Latour from Chateau Latour, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The millennium vintage from the storied cellars of Chateau Latour graced us with a wine that is an eloquent testament to the estate's unwavering commitment to quality. The second wine, 2000 Forts de Latour, offers an alluring glimpse into the terroir-driven prowess of Pauillac, while it meticulously captures the quintessence of this climatically blessed year.

A Vintage Written in the Stars

Famed for its structured finesse and capacity for ageing, the 2000 Forts de Latour offers a study in elegance. Gifted with a favourable season, this vintage was afforded an unhurried ripening period. An Indian summer blessed with dry heat and cool nights presented optimal harvest conditions, crafting wines of exceptional balance and poise.

Enveloped in a cloak of dark fruit aromatics and tempered with notes of cedar, the 2000 offering presents a remarkably tuned palate echoed by its parent lineage. The integration of oak is sublime, housing layers that unfurl pastilles of cassis, tobacco leaf and graphite with gently gripping tannins yielding a silken grip. A levity on the mid-palate secures its place among one of the more accessible vintages from Chateau Latour.

An Investment Worthy of Every Cellar

The astute investor will note that the actions of Mother Nature have adroitly been transcribed into each bottle. Given its precision and potential longevity, holdings in this wine present a perspicacious investment indeed. With two decades behind it, the 2000 Forts de Latour stands at an impressive juncture where approachability weds gracefully with depth—a boon for collectors looking to diversify a portfolio without decades of wait.

In summing up this vinous masterpiece, one cannot ignore the symphony played out on the senses. The 2000 Forts de Latour encapsulates a moment in time where every decision made by both mankind and nature worked concertedly to produce a wine that is not simply consumed but experienced. It remains an enigmatic offering that continues to captivate discerning palates and astute investors alike.

Starting to open now. Shows blueberry, raspberry, and other dark berry character. Licorice. Round and delicious. Start drinking.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's 2000 tasting in London. This Les Forts de Latour is quite hard to fathom out and at first, it was difficult to pin down. But returning after a couple of hours, the wine is finally starting to coalesce, with ripe strawberry, blackcurrant and mint on the nose with just a hint of graphite. The palate, hard at first, softens and finds its rhythm, sensuous and beautifully balanced on the pure finish. Approach with caution...but do approach. Drink 2014-2025+ Tasted March 2010.

The 2000 Les Forts de Latour is a seriously endowed wine with notes of black walnuts, black currants, crushed rock, tobacco and spice box. Full-bodied, luscious but still in need of another 2-3 years to hit full maturity, it certainly can evolve for another 15 or more years, and looks to be slightly richer and longer-lived than I originally predicted. My original ratings appear to have been dead on the money for both of these efforts from Chateau Latour.
