The 1997 Pontet Canet from Chateau Pontet Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

With the 1997 Pontet Canet from Chateau Pontet Canet, we are gifted with a Pauillac that articulates a season's narrative in each sip—an emblem of elegance, this particular vintage etches itself into the memory of those who have the pleasure to dance with it across their palates.

A Year of Subtlety and Nuance

The 1997 vintage in Bordeaux did not shout with the fiery opulence of its neighbouring years. It was, instead, a vintage that whispered of finesse and demanded closer attention from the oenophiles amongst us who seek the stories beneath the surface. Yet within this whisper lay a beautiful potential for wine investment; it is these quieter vintages that often surprise and delight the astute investor with their grace and longevity.

Pauillac's Prowess On Display

Lying within the famed left bank of Bordeaux, Pauillac offers to its wines a near-pastoral serenity against which the temperamental coastal weather skirmishes. The 1997 commentary from Chateau Pontet Canet captures this dialogue between earth and sky—the cabernet-led ensemble delivers an undercurrent of blackcurrant stability whilst flecks of tertiary development add dimensions of tobacco and truffle to its maturing profile.

The structure, now softened with age, permits a generosity to the palate that earlier vintages merely hinted at. The tannins are resolved, allowing for a roundness and a silken mouthfeel not always forthcoming in its youth.

An Investment Vintage With Character

For investors looking beyond the valorised vintages, the 1997 Pontet Canet represents an intriguing proposition. Its understated excellence exemplifies how judicious harvesting, adroit cellar practices, and patience can converge to create a wine that exceeds expectations placed upon its harvest year.

As it stands today, this Pontet Canet is entering a plateau of maturity—where once there was robust vigour, now there is gracious complexity. For collectors seeking to diversify portfolios with vintages that carry an air about them—one of heritage-driven craft and a story interwoven between vine and vintner—the 1997 is laying down a delicate gauntlet.

In conclusion, when one meditates upon the beguiling nature of Bordeaux's chameleonic disposition, it is vintages such as 1997 which demand that we remain ever vigilant and receptive. The 1997 Pontet Canet from Chateau Pontet Canet continues to be one such vintage—an articulate envoy from Pauillac bearing testament to the nuances of time.

Scores and tasting notes

This wine, which had performed well from cask (particularly for the vintage), was severe, tannic, gritty, and attenuated on two of the three occasions it was tasted from bottle. I have lowered the score and added a question mark because the wine lacks the color saturation of the barrel samples, exhibits more herbaceousness, and the tannin is astringent. Perhaps it is going through an awkward stage of development, but right now I am less enthusiastic. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2010.

Medium ruby core. Light feminine nose. Simple dark blackberry fruits and some toasty vanilla. Forward drinking. Again a bit short. Tasted June 1999.
