2006 La Conseillante

By Chateau La Conseillante

2006 La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux

In the picturesque Pomerol, the 2006 vintage of La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante embodies a study in resilience and reveals the prowess of meticulous vineyard management against nature's varied canvas. An unusually dry August followed by a warm September that year presented a tussle between climate and vine, resulting in a wine of distinction for fine wine investors and connoisseurs alike.

Articulating Elegance Amid Tough Weather Conditions

The 2006 La Conseillante bears testament to the tenacity of its terroir. Driving rain in June and a broiling July led to a challenging start; however, the resolve paid off with impeccable timing for harvest under September’s skies. The winemakers’ deft touch ensured that the optimum ripeness was captured - a pursuit reflected in the nuanced composition of this noble claret.

The Vintage's Unique Harmony

This distinguished vintage exudes an opulent bouquet of sun-ripened blackberries and cherries married with subtle hints of truffle and allspice. It has an alluring palate marked by silky tannins and a layered complexity that speaks volumes of its meritorious evolution. Notes of dark fruit confiture interplay with earthy undertones, bearing the hallmark iron-clad structure yet supple grace that Pomerol lovers treasure.

Restraint is key in the 2006 La Conseillante's profile — it offers depth without overbearing weight, maintaining a balletic poise between intensity and elegance. The surprisingly fresh acidity offers a longevity potential that can ride well into the next decade or more.

Enterprising collectors recognise the innate value 2006 La Conseillante presents for long-term investment. As the wine continues to unfurl its multilayered complexity with each passing year, it firmly establishes itself as one of the more intriguing propositions from Pomerol’s rich compendium of vintages.

The year 2006 might not have had the fanfare of its immediate predecessors in Bordeaux, but therein lies an opportunity: for those astute enough to discern, this Pomerol paragon from Chateau La Conseillante emerges as a quiet triumph, and one certainly worthy of both investment and indulgence.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London and then at the château. The 2006 Château La Conseillante had perhaps the most show-stopping bouquet out of all seventy-odd 2006s that I tasted at ten years. It explodes from the glass with raspberry coulis, kirsch, honey and marmalade, so much so that I am not sure if I would nail it as a Bordeaux, let alone a Pomerol! It is precocious and very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, plenty of black truffle, fine tannin and well-judged acidity. This is an opulent, decadent La Conseillante that is atypical of the vintage and yet you totally fall for its charms. What it might lack in subtlety, it makes up for in sheer charm. Tasted January 2016.
