Until the era of management under Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, Château Angélus could not really claim to be making as fine a wine as its terroir allowed. Forward-thinking Hubert set about making many changes, including the early adoption of open-topped vats for fermenting and barrel maturation - both techniques which were picked up on by Hubert in his trips to Burgundy. Another bold and progressive change was that of the name, which went from L’Angélus to Angélus, as Hubert observed this would lead the château to the top of alphabetical directories.
The attention to detail in the handling of Château Angélus, has led to an increase in quality, reflected most obviously in its promotion in the 2012 St Émilion Classification to Premier Grand Cru Classés A status, placing it in the top 4 châteaux in the region.
Château Angelus enjoyed valuable product placement in Casino Royale, in which Daniel Craig’s 007 is seen enjoying a glass- a move which Hubert de Boüard told decanter.com led to a substantial sales spike. While prices for fine French wine are expected to stabilise in coming years, Angélus has been forecasted continued growth due to current brand strength following its St Émilion reclassification and thanks to strong sales to China- where the bell that appears on every bottle of the Grand Vin is considered a lucky symbol.
A triumphant comeback beginning in the 1980s, following the appointments of Hubert de Boüard and Michel Rolland, became a meteoric rise, with Angélus currently considered among the very top wine producers, not merely in St Émilion but in the entire Bordeaux region. Critic Neal Martin has praised the consistency in quality of wines produced and even in 2007, a washout year with many disappointing vintages, Angélus was delighting critics.
1990, 1995 and 2001 have all been singled out as ‘outstanding’ vintages and the 2009 vintage received a near perfect score of 99-points, demonstrating the upward trajectory in quality the wines of this château are enjoying and since then the 2015 vintage impressed with 97 points from Neal Martin.
Château Angélus has been owned by the same family for over a hundred years and to get a grasp of history of the estate, one must understand the Boüard de Laforest family- whose ancestry has been rooted in Bordeaux for more than 600 years. Following the acquisition of the estate in 1909, neighbouring vineyards were gradually assimilated from Clos D’Angélus in 1924, and again in 1969 when lands from Beauséjour-Bécot were added to the property, bringing the Angélus vinyward to a total of 23.4 hectares.
The arrival of newly-qualified oenologist Hubert de Boüard in 1976 was an important milestone. Having studied under the famed Emile Peynaud, he was able to bring his expertise to bear on the fortunes of the estate. Hubert assumed full control of the estate in 1985, but to this day he supplements his expertise through consultation with external oenologists on best practices for his vineyards, including Michel Rolland, who has a great influence here.

A candidate for one of the finest Angelus produced to date (and there have been many, including 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2005), this blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc was fashioned from tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts a black/purple color along with a gorgeous perfume of blueberry liqueur, spring flowers and graphite. In the mouth, notes of incense and cassis also emerge from this velvety-textured, full-bodied, intensely concentrated 2009. With silky tannins, low acidity and spectacular purity, texture and depth, it is already approachable (although I’m sure proprietor Hubert de Bouard would think drinking it now is akin to infanticide), but should keep for 20-30+ years.
This 7,000 case blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc will rival or perhaps eclipse vintages such as 2000, 1998, 1990, and 1989. Its dense purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, espresso roast, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of wood. In spite of its thick texture, terrific acidity, high tannins, and enormous intensity as well as richness, it is surprisingly approachable, but given how slowly the 1989 and 1990 have aged, I would recommend cellaring it for 8-10 years. It should keep for three decades. A brilliant wine!
What can you say about Hubert de Bouard and Angelus? Each year they seem to turn out one great wine after another, and the 2000 showed its merit in two different tastings. A wine of great intensity, bluish/black, with a big, sweet kiss of graphite, crushed rocks, blueberry, spring floral garden and blackberry liqueur, unctuously textured as well as pure, dense, and stunningly rich, this full-bodied wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 25-30 years.
This blockbuster, blue/purple-colored wine boasts an exceptional nose of subtle licorice, menthol, creme de cassis, blackberries, and hints of coffee and charcoal. Full-bodied, flamboyant, and opulent, with low acidity and sweet tannin, it still seems young at age 19. Expansive and full, wine lovers will argue for decades to come which is better, the sensational 1990 or the equally terrific 1989. It should continue to drink beautifully for 20-25 years. A great Angelus and one of the two or three best vintages made under the talented young Hubert de Bouard, this wine still has a youthful, saturated ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of melted licorice intermixed with creme de cassis, tapenade, cedar, spice box, and vanilla. Very full-bodied, opulent, and rich, it is one of the 1989s that justifies the lofty reputation of this vintage. Extremely full-bodied, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for at least another 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted, 4/02.
Owned by Hubert de Bouard, the 2012 Angelus was harvested between October 8-18, yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare, and the natural alcohol was over 14%. The final blend was 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the superstars of the vintage, the dense opaque purple/blue-colored 2012 offers up notes of barbecue smoke, graphite, charcoal, blueberries, blackberries, sweet cherries and forest floor. With terrific fruit intensity, a powerful, layered, multidimensional mouthfeel and full body, it should be drinkable at an early age given the sweetness of the tannin. It should easily evolve for 15-20 years.
A spectacular effort (what's new?), this brilliant offering from proprietor Hubert de Bouard is another classic. A blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of creosote, blueberry pie, espresso roast, blackberries, and graphite. Extremely full-bodied and stunningly rich with a multi-layered texture, sweet tannin, and a 45-second finish, this exceptional 2006 is one of the great wines of St.-Emilion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.
A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc cropped at 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2010 may not hit the peaks of the extraordinary 2009 or 2005, but it is another fabulous wine from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with abundant aromas of acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice and subtle toasty oak in the background. A notion of graphite emerges as the wine sits in the glass, which tends to be a characteristic of Angelus. Long, rich, dense and full-bodied with high but well-integrated tannins, it will rival the 1989 and 1990 as well as the 2009 and 2005 as one of the finest wines made at this estate. At present, the 2009 has a slight edge because of its more sumptuous texture. Nevertheless, the 2010 is a great wine with a future of at least 30 years!
This 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc is one of the strongest wines of the vintage. A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.
A superb effort in this vintage, Angelus's opaque purple-colored 1995 is a massive, powerful, rich offering with plenty of ripe, sweet tannin. The wine's aromatics include scents of Provencal olives, jammy black cherries, blackberries, truffles, and toast. A very full-bodied wine, it is layered, thick, and pure. This is the most concentrated of the 1995 St.-Emilion premier grand crus. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025.
