Eloquent Expressions from an Unpredictable Year

The unpredictability of 2006 saw early summer heatwaves followed by cooler periods and showers, leading to a laborious growing season across Bordeaux. Yet, it is precisely these conditions that necessitated a tactical approach to harvest, ensuring each grape reached optimum ripeness. The result is a vintage which bursts with meticulous distinction – a tangible narrative of the vigneron's mastery over nature's caprices.

A Vintage Invested in Character

In the glass, the 2006 Chateau Canon-la-Gaffeliere is a symphonic play between the plump Merlot and the vivacious Cabernet Franc, harmonised with the backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of dark cherries and blackberries pirouette around hints of tobacco and earthy undergrowth, conjuring images of Saint-Émilion’s limestone expanse awash in autumnal sunlight. Sipping this wine is to savor textural complexity; ripe tannins enrobed in silky richness, all underscored by an acidity which carries whispers of longevity.

For connoisseurs and investors, the 2006 vintage offers an intriguing tableau – one where structure meets svelte, depth intertwines with elegance. As such, this Chateau Canon-la-Gaffeliere reveals its full splendor and investment potential when given time to unfurl in the cellar.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière has a relatively opulent bouquet compared to the 2006 Les Grandes Murailles, with scents of cassis, cranberry, leather and roasted herbs, demonstrating a little more "guts" than its peers (as Canon-la-Gaffelière is wont to do). The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannin, quite plush in the mouth with tart red cherry fruit, strawberry, morels and a vein of tobacco towards the finish that carries commendable weight. This is drinking well after ten years and should provide another five years of drinking pleasure. Tasted January 2016.
