Clime and Conditions: '96 in Retrospect

The '96 season tasked Saint-Emilion's vintners with its late downpours and an erratic ripening period. Yet, it is precisely these challenges that coax out the latent potential in Bordeaux's steadfast varieties. The 1996 Pavie encapsulates this dance with nature—where Merlot emerges graceful and unblemished from the tumult into the bottle.

The profile of the '96 Pavie reveals a harmonious mélange of matured fruit aromas, underpinned by refined notes of truffle and a suggestion of leather. On the palate, it offers layers that unfold languidly—a reliable hallmark of its class and breed. Secondary flavours dally with tertiary complexities, creating an ensemble both nuanced and richly evocative of its vintage narrative.

In sum, an investment in the 1996 Pavie from Chateau Pavie promises not just returns in cultural capital but also an odyssey for the senses—one where each taste is an exploration of Saint-Emilion's indomitable spirit. This vintage’s journey from climatic adversity to cellar treasure serves as a beacon to both oenophiles and investors alike.

The dark ruby-colored 1996 Pavie exhibits a pinched, tart personality with moderate quantities of red currant fruit in the nose, along with earth and spice. Although it exhibits good, clean winemaking, this understated, lean, angular wine does not possess much stuffing, flesh, or length. It should keep for 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2012.

Deep red colour. Concentrated and quite full on the palate but the wood does not seem well-integrated. Quite woody. Medium fruits. The palate lacks vigour and acidity. A bit disappointing. Drink within 5 years.
