Integrity of Terroir and Masterful Viticulture

In my decades of wine appraisal, seldom have I encountered such clarity of terroir expression as in the 2016 vintage. Let us direct our palettes to discern the intricate layers within this wine — precise, harmonious, with a balletic grace in integrating fruit and tannin. Right away, the palate encounters a robust display of black fruits, intricately woven with an earthy truffle note — a signature whisper from the Saint-Émilion limestone soils. As ever, Saint-Émilion’s merlot vines are the stars of this show, but what makes 2016 exceptional is the underpinning strength from the cabernet franc — providing structural backbone and aromatic complexity.

This has an incredible finish to it and shows such energy and intensity. Full-bodied yet vivid and energetic. Chewy tannins. Goes on for minutes. Merlot magic.

The 2016 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak barriques) has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. Wow—it slides sensuously out of the glass with scents of candied violets, Chinese five spice and chocolate box over a core of baked plums, black cherry compote and warm black raspberries plus wafts of new leather and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is decadently spicy, with bags of black fruit preserves framed by plush tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift.

Vivid, with racy acidity from the start that allows the copious raspberry and plum confiture flavors to pump along with energy. Very enticing spice treatment on the finish. Has a lavish edge, but its energy offsets that nicely.—J.M.
