The Bordeaux vintage of 2008 was one that defied early scepticism, unfurling with time to reveal clusters of gems within its repertoire. Subtle Elegance: A Testament to Tenacity

This particular year started tentatively across the Bordeaux region, with a cool spring giving vignerons a reason to furrow their brows. However, miraculous late summer sunshine laid the foundation for an unexpectedly successful harvest that would dovetail into an opulent concoction of fruit and finesse. The 2008 Leoville Poyferre encapsulates this phenomenon with aplomb. Its bouquet of cassis and cedarwood aligns with hints of tobacco, announcing a resplendence which permeates throughout the palate – it's a blend where the Cabernet Sauvignon sings amongst its varietal peers.

One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a “best buy” for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last for 20-25 years. Bravo!

I am impressed with the fruit and velvety tannins. Full and deliciously fruity with soft tannins and rich fruit. Blueberry. Open and gorgeous. Impressive for the vintage.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. Didier Cuvelier’s wine seems to be on an upward curve in bottles. It has a very attractive bouquet with cedar and tobacco aromas. A lovely “classic” Saint Julien nose. The palate is ripe and well-defined with firm tannins, extremely well balanced towards the elegant finish. This is beautifully made and quite feminine, surpassing my expectations. Tasted January 2012.
