An Exquisite Vintage with Investment Pedigree

The 1990 vintage was seen by many to be kissed by fortune; a season blessed with even, moderate weather that afforded the grapes a steady maturation pace. These ideal conditions are masterfully expressed in this Bonnes-Mares, a wine that encapsulates both the vitality of its vintage and the venerable essence of its terroir.

Artful Expression of Terroir and Time

This particular offering from Domaine Comte de Vogue attests to a stunning convergence of elements. On the nose, a bouquet of ripe cherries and blackcurrant seamlessly blends with whispers of truffle and damp forest floor—a complex interplay between fruit and earth wrought by time. As it unfolds on the palate, layers of profound depth hint at the judicious ageing potential yet delight with a freshness that belies its years. Linger longer, and you may find undercurrents of savouriness that are as compelling as they are unexpected.

The textural finesse, monolithic structure, and potent yet ethereal flavours underscore why so many investors turn towards storied vintages like this for their portfolios. This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is not merely housed within the bottle; it embodies the bottle—a microcosm of history, passion, and sublime craftsmanship.

In summary, Domaine Comte de Vogue's interpretation of the fateful '90s summer is nothing short of an oenophilic meditation. Its resplendent allure is evident now and promises further revelations as time unwinds its coils around this epic vintage. While the Bonnes Mares is closed, the dark ruby/purple color and the wine's terrific potential are evident. Full-bodied, with a blossoming, black-cherry nose complemented by a judicious use of toasty new oak, this wine exhibits wonderful richness, excellent definition and structure, and a long, dense, concentrated finish. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2010. After a wait of nearly twenty years, these 1990s are the first truly profound wines to emerge from this great domaine since 1972. If the rigid oenologist who fashions these wines, Monsieur Millet, would throw away his filters, they probably could have been even more exciting. However, these 1990s are stunning enough to convince me that the resurrection of Comte de Vogue has begun. Interestingly, Millet has shown some flexibility and is now doing a cold maceration of 5-7 days before starting the fermentation, which has no doubt contributed to the black/purple color of these wines.
