Vintner's Vision: A Vintage Defined by Nature and Nurture

2011 was a growing season that presented challenges from capricious climatic conditions across the region. However, within the nurturing cradle of Chambolle-Musigny, the Premier Cru vineyard of 'Les Amoureuses' triumphant in capturing an equilibrium seldom witnessed. This harmonious tenor is vividly echoed in the glass, where poised acidity intertwines with ripe red fruits, and subtle tannins form the backbone to an elegantly structured profile.

The perfume is lithe, with redolent red cherry, seasoned with dustings of clove and earthiness – it is terroir speaking softly but with unyielding intent. The vintage’s relatively cooler conditions also bestowed a refreshing grace upon the palate that continues to deepen with layers of complexity as time weaves its magic.

For those seeking to enrich their investment portfolio with cultivated taste, the 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses from Domaine Comte de Vogue represents a choice as astute as it is beguiling. This is a wine that revels in its singularity, inviting contemplation and commanding attention whilst promising further enrichment with proper cellaring.

In summation, this particular bottling stands as one of those rare oenological narratives wherein each element cooperates splendidly, weaving a tapestry of nuanced fruit with minerality – all coalescing into a symphony indicative of stellar viticulture and deft winemaking. The serious wine investor will note not just its current drinking pleasure but also its promise of future ascendency; thus securing some bottles would indeed be a perceptive addition influenced by both palate and portfolio considerations.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses from Comte de Vogüé has a quintessential “Amoureuses” bouquet with opulent and generous black cherries and blueberry aromas, distant scents of oak vanillin developing in the glass. This is very floral and perfumed. The palate is medium-bodied with very lithe and supple tannins. The acidity is well judged and it is blessed with a very satin-like, harmonious finish that demonstrates great persistence. This does not quite match up to the example I tasted last year, but I suspect that it will begin to blossom in 2-3 years.
