Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault les Perrieres

2007 Meursault les Perrieres

By Domaine des Comtes Lafon

2005 Chevalier Montrachet by Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy, France

The 2005 vintage in Burgundy is often heralded as one of the greats, a year that bestowed upon the terroir a climatic benevolence, crafting wines of both opulence and precision. Within this revered cohort sits the 2005 Chevalier Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive, a white Burgundy that resonates with the connoisseur for its exquisite representation of place and time.

A Singular Vintage from a Stellar Producer

Domaine Leflaive's mastery of Chardonnay is uncompromised, yet it is the 2005 Chevalier Montrachet that particularly articulates their deft combination of tradition and innovation. The 2005 season granted an even pacing of warmth and rainfall, leading to grapes that achieved full phenolic ripeness alongside arresting acidity. This precarious balance is reflected in the wine’s harmonious composition.

The Quintessence of 2005 Expressed

A tasting of the 2005 Chevalier Montrachet unveils layers that are profoundly complex yet strikingly lucid. A bouquet of toasted brioche laced with honeysuckle and citrus zest prefaces a palate where purity meets depth. Each sip delivers minerality akin to liquid stone – a fingerprint of the chalky soils – alongside a tapestry of ripe pear, apple compote, and hints of almond.

The performance on the palate is as much an ode to the winemaker’s art as it is to nature’s providence in 2005. Its poised ageing potential makes it not only a treasure for the collector but also provides an intriguing narrative for wine investment portfolios.

The 2005 Chevalier Montrachet by Domaine Leflaive stands as a testament to a harmonious synergy between terroir and human touch, encapsulating a moment in time where every elemental detail aligned to craft something exquisite. For connoisseurs and investors alike, it behoves mention that this white Burgundy stands prominently amongst its venerated peers, seducing both palate and portfolio with equal aplomb.

The 2007 Meursault les Perrieres from Dominique Lafon has a relatively extravagant bouquet that does not hold back: pralines, coconut, almond and then later a hint of creme caramel. The palate is well balanced with plenty of oak on the entry and that really is the leitmotif for this Perrieres, to such an extent that I yearn for more mineralite and Perrieres typicity to be expressed on the finish. Not a bad Meursault, but Dominique has made better Perrieres in other vintages.
