2006 La Romanee

By Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

2006 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France

Majestically poised on the zenith of terroir expression, the 2006 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a shining exemplar of its genre. This vintage resides in that grand echelon where only few wines dare to tread, eloquently capturing the essence of its provenance.

An Odyssey Through the Senses

The year 2006 in Burgundy was one where vignerons had to skilfully manoeuvre through climatic whimsy. A modestly warm summer followed by an unexpectedly cooler August instilled an element of suspense but ultimately a reward for those with patience and foresight. The La Romanée 2006 is such a triumph, weaving complexity and finesse into every sip.

Upon decanting, this polished wine liberates aromas of ripe cherries and violets, ensnaring the nose with enticements, leaving behind a reverie of forest floor and an ethereal hint of spice. The palate pays homage to the storied wine region with abundant grace; structured tannins embrace succulent fruit profiles, each deftly counterbalanced by a vivacious minerality that speaks loudly of La Romanée's unparalleled terrain.

A Vintage Worth its Weight in Gold

With ageing, the 2006 vintage has blossomed into a true spectacle of balance: every nuance and whisper that was but a murmur at bottling now resonates as a harmonious symphony. For fine wine investors seeking out bottles with potential longevity and escalating appreciation, herein lies an opportunity par excellence. The 2006 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair not only stands as a testament to the winemaking prowess of its creators but also as a beacon of investment-worthy Burgundian artistry.

As this precious elixir crosses the threshold from youthful exuberance to a stately maturity, it bestows upon those patient enough to wait an unforgettable vinous journey. It remains one of the pinnacles within my purview – an illustrative chapter in the great anthology of Burgundy.

Served from magnum, the 2006 La Romanée Grand Cru replicates the seductive aromatics that it showed in bottle last year: fragrant red berries, that hint of orange peel and here, perhaps showing a little more opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannin. The acidity keeps the La Romanée on its tip-toes, here perhaps showing a touch more depth and grip than the bottle version, but still with that twist of bitter cherry on the finish. It is a classy number, no doubt, and it will bestow those fortunate enough to own a bottle 3 or 4 decades of pleasure. Tasted November 2016.
