2012 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France

A vintage that resonates with vitality, the 2012 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair reflects a year that posed challenges yet yielded resplendent results for vintners who navigated the tempest of Mother Nature with deft precision. As I swirled and sipped this wine, the narrative unfolded, exuding the rigor and finesse that this parcel of land in Vosne-Romanée so reliably imparts.

Purity and Precision: A Testament to Rigorous Viticulture

The year 2012 was no stranger to hurdles in Burgundy; erratic weather led to a smaller harvest. However, what defines this vintage is its intense concentration—a serendipitous byproduct of naturally reduced yields. The allure of La Romanée from this particular year lies not only in its scarcity but in the layered complexity and enchanting perfume that have become synonymous with the esteemed plots of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair.

Defining the 2012 vintage of La Romanée is a harmonious mélange of dark cherry and ripe raspberry notes, twined with an undercurrent of fresh violets and warm earth. The palate reveals a regal structure, all while maintaining an ethereal grace—an equilibrium that commands attention yet never overwhelms the senses.

Investment-worthy Pedigree

In our evolving market, fine wine investors seek not only quality but also exclusivity. The 2012 La Romanée is one of those rarified expressions which inherently understand the assignment—combining pedigree with performance-to-command attention on the global stage.

While Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has honed their craft over generations, it is in such vintages as 2012 that their mastery is distinctively showcased. This wine's potential for longevity hints at a promising trajectory for those with an eye toward maturation and eventual realisation within their portfolios.

As seasoned fine wine enthusiasts will appreciate, each bottle of 2012 La Romanée acts as a liquid biography of its terroir and vintage conditions. Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 La Romanée Grand Cru from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has a slightly reduced bouquet, a little meatiness coming through, touches of Provençal herbs and that palpable sense of mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with lace-like but tensile tannin, exquisite poise, feminine and elegant, gradually building to a very composed finish with beautifully integrated oak. This feels so weightless in the mouth, yet there is wonderful intensity and intellect. Certainly, this is one of the wines of the vintage.
