2004 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot, Burgundy, France

Exploring the remarkable terroirs of Burgundy reveals an exceptional jewel in the 2004 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot. This wine captures the quintessence of its vintage with a fidelity that only the old vines of Clos St Denis can deliver.

A Year of Elegance and Precision

The year 2004 in Burgundy was one where meticulous vignerons, such as Ponsot, outshone their peers. A mildew threat early in the season urged growers to diligent management, which led to a harvest that brought forth clarity and precision in the wines. The 2004 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru personifies this detail-oriented approach with its refined complexity and poise.

A Vintage to Savour: Investment Meets Enjoyment

Tasting this vintage is a venture into the sophistication of old-world winemaking. Its aromatic profile calls to mind a tapestry of ripe cherries intertwined with earthy undertones, while a whisper of spice suggests the subtlety this vintage engenders. The palate revels in the alignment of seamless tannins and a buoyant acidity that forecasts longevity, which discerning investors will note as a reassuring sign of value appreciation over time.

The investment realm often measures worth in tangible returns; yet with the 2004 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot, there lies an opportunity to invest not just in liquid assets, but also in moments that transcend time through taste. It remains one of the beacons of the 2004 Burgundian vintages, offering depth and drinking pleasure that will unfurl beautifully with proper cellaring.

In summary, this fine vintage encapsulates the masterful equilibrium between nature's uncertainties and human craftsmanship--a signature of Ponsot's commitment to excellence. It thoroughly articulates its year's narrative through each sip taken and each moment savoured. For those looking to enrich their cellar and their senses, it stands as a prudent yet delectable choice.

The 2007 Nuits St. Georges Aux Lavieres is drinking so beautifully now that it is difficult resisting the temptation just to open all bottles! It has a fragrant, floral bouquet with crystalline red cherries mixed with blood orange scents. The palate is wonderfully balanced with superb poise, a fleshy texture and a finish that just glides to its conclusion. Perhaps it does not quite have the persistency of Louis-Michel’s top wines, but it just an effortless Pinot Noir that is nigh irresistible. I will be covering Louis-Michel’s highly praised; elusive and expensive wines in future issues of The Wine Advocate. But for now, in October I attended a fascinating tasting of older vintages to glean how they age. Certainly, these wines are imbued with a citrus freshness that verges of sorbet-like with some wines. They clearly go out to impress and impress they do. What these wines refuse to do is short-change the Burgundy-lover apropos perfume or flavor; they willingly go out there to satisfy the senses. They also appear to age slowly and gracefully, and I suspect most of these will reach their plateau after around a decade in the cellar.
