A Vintage For The Patient Investor

Burgundy's 2013 season was no stranger to caprice. A delayed start and fluctuating conditions necessitated meticulous vineyard management and a scrupulous selection process at harvest. Nevertheless, Domaine Fourrier’s commitment to low-intervention viticulture created an ideal glass for the expression of terroir. A vigilant investor will recognise that it is precisely such vintages that often beget unexpected treasures years down the line with careful cellaring.

Subtle Sophistication: A Palate’s Chronicle

Within the bottle lies a tapestry of depth and finesse; the palate is greeted by ripe cherries and summer earth, nuanced by an ethereal truffle note – a hallmark from this corner of Gevrey-Chambertin's hallowed precincts. As with many of Fourrier's collected works, the tannins are as sophisticated as the finest woven silk, lending structure without overshadowing the symphony of red fruit that dances gracefully across the palate.

The 2013 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru echoes a subtlety undisturbed by overt oak, its modest brushstrokes of vanilla and sweet spice offer support but never detract from the purity of fruit upheld by a vibrant acidity. The finish is prolonged, pure and poignantly reflective of Domaine Fourrier’s stewardship of their cherished terroir.

As enthusiasts and connoisseurs contemplate their next investment piece, I implore you to look beyond the immediate vivacity of recent vintages and consider the quiet evolution that awaits within bottles such as these. Reflective of its year, this wine promises complexity for those who appreciate how time can unveil layers unforeseen at first blush. In summary, an asset worthy of patience; 2013 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Fourrier is a judicious addition to any fine wine portfolio.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras is still showing a little new oak on the nose and needs to shrug off a little reduction, but underneath lies some very pure black cherry and blueberry fruit interlaced with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of chewiness on the entry, good depth and cohesion, clamming up toward the finish that suggests it will require several years in bottle. This is very fine. Tasted June 2015.
