The 2014 vintage in Burgundy was one that offered a panoply of challenges, resulting in wines that resonate with the tenacious spirit of their makers. One such exemplar is the 2014 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. Navigating through climatic vagaries, the vineyards still managed to yield fruit that mirrors the quintessence of their terroir, an invaluable asset for fine wine investors.

An Ode to Elegance and Poise

In this particular year, late ripening provided a platform for an astonishing depth of finesse. It's evident that the meticulous viticulture and discerning approach to vinification have ushered the 2014 Vosne Romanee les Suchots into a league of its own. Even amidst the unpredictability that swept across Burgundy, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair marshalled their resources, culminating in a wine that sings with structure and sophistication.

A Vintage That Speaks

The wine holds a palette of deep garnet hues, with an olfactory ensemble of cherry and blackcurrant, gilded by hints of violets and peony. On the palate, it reveals eloquent layers: the initial silkiness progresses towards a structured mid-palate and concludes with an enduring finish, underpinned by fine-grained tannins and a chiaroscuro of toast and spice from judicious oak integration.

For connoisseurs contemplating an addition to their portfolios, the 2014 Vosne Romanee les Suchots presents a compelling narrative. This wine does not only promise maturation potential but stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptive expertise of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair.

An Investment Grade Vintage

In evaluating this offering, discerning investors will note that despite or perhaps because of, its challenging gestation, the 2014 Vosne Romanee les Suchots has flourished remarkably. Its poised evolution in bottle showcases a lustre that indicates its capacity to age gracefully for decades. The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Suchots has a bouquet that is very...Suchots, that is to say more opulent than its siblings, rounded with dark cherries and crème de cassis, good volume, especially for this vintage. The palate is well balanced with good structure, a touch of salinity on the entry, flattering as Suchots normally are, though with good structure and focus on the white pepper-dashed finish. This has great potential.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a very poised, floral bouquet with much more complexity and intensity than the 2014 Vosne-Romanée Chaumes. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, very structured and firm in the mouth with a long and persistent, saline finish. It feels like a very "correct" Suchots at the moment, but I envisage that it will gain weight and the vineyard's trademark opulence with time in bottle. This is excellent. Tasted November 2016.
