2016 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France

In the pantheon of esteemed Burgundian crus, the 2016 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair stands as a testament to the intricacy and resilience of fine wine. The climatic vicissitudes of 2016 in Burgundy posed challenges, yet resulted in wines with impeccable structure and aromatic complexity.

A Symphony of Climatic Challenges

The vintage’s character was sculpted by a growing season that witnessed a frost-encased spring, besieging the vineyards, subsequently followed by mildew threats due to summer rains. However, an Indian summer's grace led the vines towards remarkable recovery and fruit maturation.

The 2016 Vosne Romanee les Suchots encapsulates this climatic drama through its striking balance and meticulous expression of terroir. On the nose, the wine presents an evocative bouquet of dark cherries, ripe strawberries, intertwined with whispers of violet and underbrush, a hallmark of Vosne Romanee's enchantment.

Refinement in a Glass: A Testament to Skilled Winemaking

The palate encounters profound layers unfolding—taut minerality grounding the lush fruit core, with sophisticated tannins lending defined shape to the liquid tapestry. This wine is at once both powerful and elegant; age has begun to soften its formidable contours into a velvety embrace that promises further evolution—a true joy for any investor seeking depth and longevity.

As nights grow cooler, its warmth recommends sharing amongst discerning companions beside a crackling hearth, encouraging contemplation on nature's alchemy transformed by vintner artistry into bottled poetry.

In closing, the 2016 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair bespeaks of rarity—one commemorating not just extraordinary winemaking but also the capacity of vines to triumph over adversity. It stands as one of the illustrious cuvées suggesting an alluring investment opportunity for novices and veterans alike within the world of fine Burgundy wines. Reflecting on its journey from vine to cellar, it is evident that such pedigree is not merely drunk but experienced—an essential narrative for distinguished portfolios.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a well-defined bouquet with a little more opulence than fellow Suchots encountered from other growers, with scents of black cherries, peppermint and a touch of raspberry preserve developing with time. The palate is very well proportioned with good density, weighty in the mouth, quite savory (again) toward the finish with a tang of blood orange. Not bad at all, although I have a preference for the 2015 last year.
