Chronicle of a Stellar Season

The narrative of Burgundy's 2010 vintage is riddled with climatic adversity that, through judicious vineyard management and vinification prowess, culminated in a triumph of concentration and elegance. The Ruchottes-Chambertin, in particular, illustrates how these challenges were transcended by Domaine Georges Roumier to achieve a wine with an impressive structure and enticing longevity.

Vintage Character: A Study in Harmony

Tasting the 2010 vintage from this esteemed plot within the Ruchottes-Chambertin appellation is a narrative of terroir spoken through the glass. There's an equipoise here; a synergy between the articulate tannins and the bright, red fruit core that seems to dance amidst whispers of spice and earthiness unique to this climat. The cooler-than-average growing season lent an extraordinary tension to the wines, which now unfurl with grace after a decade. The integration of these elements forecasts a magnificent ageing trajectory for investors.

Despite the insistence of time to mould its contours, the 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier carries an immediacy that seduces one to indulge now, yet promises untold complexities should patience favour your indulgence.

Investment-Worthy Pedigree

In an investment context, the 2010 vintage stands out as a beacon for both its current approachability and potential for appreciation. As Burgundy lovers continue to seek out pinnacle years that blend character and age-worthiness, the 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin emerges as a profound choice for portfolios.

This vintage is not merely a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Domaine Georges Roumier but also an articulate expression of Burgundy’s nuanced splendour. It is wines such as these that not only endure but evolve into legendary exemplars within one's investment quiver.

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is quite weighty and rich. Darker shades of fruit emerge gradually from this implosive, inward wine. Black cherries, sweet spices, licorice and tar come together in the glass. There is an element of sensuality here that is striking. The Ruchottes finishes with terrific energy and precision. Roumier’s Ruchottes is farmed under a metayage agreement and bottled under the Christophe Roumier label rather than under the domaine label. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. The only real problem with Christophe Roumier’s 2010s is the production, which was severely compromised by the December 2009 frost and the poor weather of 2010, especially during the flowering. On a more positive note, the wines are marked by their total transparency. Some of the entry-level wines are a bit on the light side, but the best 1er Crus and the Grand Crus are magical. Roumier started picking on September 28. Some of the wines were lightly chaptalized. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel.
