2000 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

Amidst the pantheon of Burgundian excellence, the 2000 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy stands as a testament to the harmony between terroir and the meticulous art of winemaking. The millennial vintage unfurls with a narrative of climatic benevolence, where the Vitus Vinifera basked in a season typified by seamless transitions from mild spring to an assiduous summer, culminating in an ideally timed harvest period.

An Opulent Odyssey: The 2000 Vintage

As one peers into the essence of this particular year, it becomes unabashedly clear that Domaine Leroy's approach has summoned forth a wine not merely of structure, but also soulful depth. The 2000 Clos de Vougeot captures a particular moment in time where precision meets nature’s ephemeral conditions to create something rather magical.

This vintage delineates itself with an exquisite melange of potency and elegance; a composition that resonates with ripe cherries and a whisper of earthy truffle. Tannins, now softly matured, weave through the libation like delicate lace, rendering each sip a passage through time. The supple interplay of acidity ensures that the wine greets the investor’s palate with both vitality and venerable grace.

Investing in Bottled Heritage

The partnership between the nuanced splendour of 2000 Clos de Vougeot and the illustrious pedigree of Domaine Leroy is a paragon for fine wine investors. Much more than a beverage, it is a conversation with history, an asset capable of evoking passion even as it appreciates in stature and value.

This specific vintage stands out in an investable category for its assertive yet finessed character—attributes that are enhanced by the inviolable reputation of its storied producer. It should be noted that such wines not only represent liquid luxury but also serve as strategic diversifications within one's investment portfolio.

In closing, the 2000 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy exquisitely exemplifies the prowess of Burgundy's finest vintages. It is poised with one foot entrenched in the rich tapestry of its lineage whilst the other steps forward into the future as an enduring emblem of vinous sophistication for connoisseurs and investors alike.

Aromas reminiscent of blackberry jam emanate from the glass of the 2000 Clos Vougeot. A forward wine of outstanding depth, purity, and detail, it is medium-bodied, awash in super-ripe dark fruits, and possesses an extensive finish. Drink this generous, fruit-filled offering over the next 7-8 years. Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy liked both the 2000 and 2001 vintages, stating that she was “rather pleased with the 2001s as they will bring lots of joy to those who drink them young” and that the 2000s “are candied fruit, reduction of fruit, the essence of fruit.” Many Burgundians chose to bottle their 2001 early in order to “trap” the fruit in the bottle, but Bize-Leroy beat them all to the punch, having completed the bottling process by early September, 2002. Typically an early bottler, Mme. Bize-Leroy felt that the 2001s would lose their fruit to either oxidation or the required sulfuring if left in the barrel for a longer elevage. Overall, Domaine Leroy’s 2001s are a success, though many were found to reveal stemmy, woody tannin in their finishes. If this characteristic melts away quickly, my scores on those wines will appear overly conservative. Importer: Martine’s Wines, San Raphael, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
