2002 Latricières-Chambertin from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

Domaine Leroy's offerings from Burgundy continue to enthral connoisseurs and investors alike. Among these, the 2002 Latricières-Chambertin is a vintage with a unique story to tell. This year, hailed as one of the greats for Pinot Noir in the region, has bequeathed characteristics that render this bottle exceptionally investable and delightfully consumable.

The Character of 2002: A Notable Vintage

The 2002 vintage in Burgundy saw a remarkable confluence of climatic conditions that was serendipitous for the vineyards. Gentle rains, tempered warmth, and an auspicious September led to grapes of profound quality. The Latricières-Chambertin from Domaine Leroy encapsulates this natural largesse, offering a wine of outstanding balance and structure.

Interplay of Elegance and Complexity

The wine greets the olfactory senses with a melange of red fruits and earthy undertones, typical of a quintessential Burgundian Pinot Noir yet heightened by the purity that 2002's climatic kindness infused. On the palate, this Latricières-Chambertin exhibits a seamless weave of raspberry and cherry nuances, laced with subtle spice and mineral whispers that bear testament to its noble terroir.

The harmony between tannins and acidity is, in this vintage, executed with such precision that it verges upon the orchestral. Age has wrought further sophistication on this already complex nectar, allowing secondary savoury notes to surface amidst its still-vibrant fruit core.

An Investable Nectar

As is the prerogative for astute wine investment choices, provenance is paramount, and there rest no doubts with Domaine Leroy's uncompromising commitment to excellence across their parcels. The 2002 Latricières-Chambertin stands not merely as a testament to this dedication but also as an envoy for the glorious vintage it represents. Offering both depth for the palate and potential for appreciation in value, it exemplifies qualities that resonate deeply with investors and enthusiasts of fine Burgundy wines.

In closing, this wine presents an irresistible opportunity for those looking to expand their portfolio with a bottle that epitomises both the heritage of its terroir and the best climatic offerings of its vintage. Holding a glass of the 2002 Latricières-Chambertin from Domaine Leroy is akin to grasping a piece of Burgundy's soul; it is a compelling sip into history and a smart stride into valuable viniculture.

The 2002 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a very fine contribution to the vintage courtesy of Lalou Bize-Leroy. It has a tensile bouquet with edgy black cherry, dark chocolate and undergrowth notes, holding something back at first but then getting into its stride with a few minutes in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly brittle tannin (something that I occasionally find in this grand cru.) Yes, it is a touch foursquare, "correct" compared the more sensual 2002 Vosne Beaux Monts, but the energy and focus win you over. Drink now, but don't be afraid to cellar this for another 15 to 20 years. Tasted January 2016.
