Flagey-Echezeaux Wine Region Summary

Unlike its more feminine neighbour, Chambolle Musigny, Flagey-Echezeaux’s Pinot Noir is all about power. Bordering on the more famous commune of Vosne-Romanee, its two greatest wines, Echezeaux and Grand Echezeaux, after which the village is named, are often mistaken for belonging to the former. This curious disassociation has resulted in Flagey-Echezeau’s three premier crus, Les Beaux Monts, Les Rouges, and En Orveaux, being bottled as Vosne-Romanee wine.

Its international reputation is therefore made up entirely by just the aforementioned Grand Crus, of which Echezeaux accounts for nearly 35 hectares of vines, yielding approximately 13,000 cases per year. This production is split between some 80 producers, so quality ranges a great deal across the board, but at the top end represent some of the finest wines of Burgundy, with the likes of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Comte Liger-Belair and Emmanuel Rouget (producing under Georges Jayer) making some of the best examples.

Belying its name, Grands Echezeaux is composed of just 7.5 hectares, producing as few as 3,000 cases per year. By far the most famous here is Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, with other offerings by Georges Noellat, Joseph Drouhin and Francois Lamarche also of great repute. With the average price for a bottle of DRC nearing the £2,000 mark, there are some comparative bargains to be had, including lesser known but rising stars like Coquard-Loison-Fleurot. With six Grand Crus to their name and a talented young wine maker, they are one to watch.
