By Maison Joseph Drouhin

1990 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy

The splendid 1990 vintage in Burgundy stands as a testament to the exquisite craftmanship of Maison Joseph Drouhin, known for its prowess in encapsulating the quintessence of its terroir. This particular year yielded a collection of wines that harmoniously blend finesse, depth, and ageing potential—features that are elegantly expressed in the 1990 Musigny.

A Portrait of Exemplary Viticulture and Winemaking

The conditions of 1990 offered near-ideal circumstances for vine growth and grape maturation. A mild winter was followed by a warm spring, accelerating bud-break and subsequent flowering. Summer was marked by beneficial heat without extremes, creating a long unhurried ripening period. As a result, the culmination of these climatic factors imbued the 1990 Musigny with an impeccable balance of structure and complexity.

The Singular Charisma of the 1990 Vintage

This Musigny exudes an opulent bouquet of ripe red and black cherries interlaced with earthy undertones and a hint of spice. The palate is greeted with luscious layers of fruit, particularly privy to plum and currant, set against a backdrop of refined tannins and a striking mineral streak afforded by its venerable origin. The finish is superbly long and evolves with time, revealing subtle floral nuances.

A wine's age-worthiness is meritorious for fine wine connoisseurs and investors alike, and after decades in cellar repose, the 1990 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin has emerged with regal poise. It is not merely its lustrous maturity but also its eloquent representation of the season that positions it uniquely within an oenophile's portfolio.

In conclusion, the 1990 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a shining exemplar among Burgundian legends—a discerning choice for collectors seeking to enrich their curation with a vintage celebrated for its storied provenance and exceptional cellaring narrative. A consummate investment piece, it not only delights the palate but epitomises vinicultural elegance.

My second encounter with the 1990 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Joseph Drouhin was similar to the first. Dark berry fruit, something almost animally and feral on the nose albeit in a positive sense, later more chestnut aromas filter through on the nose. The palate has retained that sweet core of leathery red fruit, soft in texture, and while missing the complexity of other vintages, there is good weight on the finish and a pleasant gaminess on the aftertaste. Tasted November 2016.
