2014 Musigny

By Maison Joseph Drouhin

2014 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy, France

In the lauded echelons of Burgundy's grand crus, the 2014 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin emerges with an articulate voice, a vintage distinct in its expression of terroir and a testament to the resilience of an uncertain climatic year. Embraced by enthusiasts and collectors alike, my encounter with this exquisite vintage revealed a narrative not just of flavour but of the storied past and hopeful future intertwined within each sip.

Characteristic Elegance amidst Climatic Caprice

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy was one fraught with challenges: a cool and damp summer that threatened with hail but concluded with an eleventh-hour reprieve through a warm September. This precarious dance with nature has endowed the 2014 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin with remarkable complexity. It exudes an aromatic finesse, threading red fruits with earthier undertones, defined by an incontrovertible minerality that speaks to its venerable Musigny roots.

A Palate of Poise and Potential

On the palate, the wine unfurls in layers; initially restrained it builds momentum, revealing nuanced juxtapositions of ripe cherries and blackcurrant against a backdrop of fine-grained tannins. Aged in oak casks, it bears subtle hints of vanilla and spice which, coupled with its bright acidity, promises longevity and evolution. As it stands now, the 2014 vintage is expressive yet possesses an aristocratic reserve that signals its capacity for remarkable development over time—qualifying it as a compelling prospect for those vested in fine wine investment.

In summation, the 2014 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin manifests as a consummate example of Burgundian dexterity in viticulture and winemaking. Its poised elegance reveals both the estate’s adept hand at coaxing out the singularity of one challenging season and nature’s ultimate benevolence. For connoisseurs seeking to embellish their collection with a wine of character and ageing potential, this vintage is undoubtedly one to hold dear.

The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru was picked on September 19 and contains 15% whole cluster fruit this year. Interestingly, this Musigny was bottled on August 14 (as far as I know, the earlier bottled Musigny this vintage, though I could be wrong!). It has a well defined bouquet, red rather than black fruit today: raspberry preserve, tobacco, wild strawberry and a touch of peppermint. It seems to gain complexity in the glass. The palate is smooth in the mouth, very supple with quite firm tannin. This is a more masculine Musigny than others, like the Bonnes-Mares quite strict with a touch of Hoisin on the finish. This is a cerebral Musigny, but personally I have fonder memories of the 2013 last year.
