Investing in an Exemplary Vintage

The vintage of 1996 is characterised by its remarkable balance and the capacity for extended ageing. Not only has the 1996 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru from Ponsot garnered the attention of collectors and investors alike, but it has also established itself as one of the more intriguing propositions for those considering adding a gem to their portfolios. The heightened anticipation that surrounds this particular vintage emanates not only from its heritage but also its performance in bottle over time.

A Distinct Expression of Terroir and Time

In 1996, Burgundy was blessed with climatic generosity, which provided an impeccable canvas for Ponsot to craft their Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru. The season's cooler temperatures led to a slow maturation process, endowing the grapes with focused acidity and an intricate composition. This precise acidity, elegantly ensconced within layers of sumptuous dark cherry and earthy truffle notes, offers an entrancing experience on the palate—the mark of a benevolent nature artfully harnessed by human hands.

The wine's structure has evolved gracefully, suggesting that investors would do well to contemplate its position among their holdings. Its tannins have matured into a silky framework supporting a luscious fruit core, now adorned with whispers of mushroom and leather – testament to the harmonious dance between fruit and tannin over the span of more than two decades.

The 1996 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru from Ponsot captures the quintessence of Burgundian majesty. For fine wine investors seeking to enrich their collections with a robust yet eloquently aged wine, it represents not only a splendid sensory journey but also an astute investment poised for further appreciation. Ponsot's 1996 Chapelle-Chambertin, tasted three times since its bottling, is ruby-colored and offers cinnamon-infused aromas of spices and sweet red fruits. This Chapelle has vibrance, a medium body, as well as excellent balance and focus. Its flavors are dominated by red currants, tangy cherries, and berries. However, it does not approach the 89-91 rating I originally gave it in Issue #118. Anticipated maturity: now-2002. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel (205) 980-8802.
