Captivating Complexity: Tasting the 1998 Barbaresco

Unforgettable for its layered complexity and arresting power, this remarkable fine wine paints a vivid picture of the vintage's noteworthy maturity. The cool, damp conditions in Piedmont during 1998 contributed to an extended growing season, allowing Nebbiolo grapes to develop opulent flavours infused with an energetic intensity. Steadfast yet enchanting, this Gaja creation opens with sublime notes of dried currants, spice and balsamic wafting seductively from the glass; a prelude to the delight that is about to unfold on your palate.

Tasting it is like stepping into a Baroque painting – all drama and suspense. Replete with brooding intensity, the wine hums with notes of dark cherries, leather and anise underpinned by firm tannins that lead into a feral finish. Effortlessly balancing power with grace, masculine with feminine complexities, it embodies the essence of high-octane Nebbiolo from a standout year.

The 1998 Barbaresco is a beautiful effort displaying fleshy, oaky, deep black cherry, raspberry, tar, and truffle scents with subtle new oak in the background. Dense, voluptuously-textured, and full-bodied, with gorgeous overall symmetry, and beautifully integrated tannin, acidity, alcohol, and wood, it will drink well for 15 or more years.
