2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino from Giacomo Conterno

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino from Giacomo Conterno is a true testament to the exquisite calibre of wines Italy has to offer. Crafted meticulously in the heart of the Piedmont region, it reflects the elegant strength and subtlety that distinguish Piedmontese reds from their counterparts.

A vintage of majestic balance

The 2010 vintage firmly stands as an exceptional one in Barolo, almost unparalleled. With confluence of climatic precision and viticultural prowess, the wines were infused with a regal charm and profound complexity. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino, a Nebbiolo of unique character, manages to encapsulate all these elements whilst magnifying them in defined focus.

The fine wines of Giacomo Conterno are celebrated universally for their timeless elegance and forbearance, the hallmarks so intrinsic to the vineyards of Piedmont. This particular wine doesn't simply pay homage to this heritage; it transcendently carries it forward.

An inimitable expression of terroir

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino embodies the delicate intrigue of Nebbiolo at its epitome. Vignerons faced an interesting challenge with this harvest, with surprisingly cool daytime temperatures counterposed by warm evenings leading up to September - resulting in an elongated ripening period that imbued the grapes with an unexpected dynamism.

The result is a vintage singularly marked by its layered intensity, positing taut cranberry and lush red cherry notes within a framework of structured tannin and crisp acidity. Its prolonged finish, reminiscent of dark chocolate and damp earth, adds another engaging dimension to this wine of remarkable depth.

An unparalleled investment opportunity

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino represents an intelligent choice for the discerning fine wine investors, appreciating not just in value but complexity and maturity with passing years. It resonates with why the wines from Italy, and more specifically those of Giacomo Conterno, remain so integral to any worthwhile wine investment portfolio.

Few wines possess the charisma, character and captivating evolution potential that this vintage has to offer. As Edvard Koeppel famously summed up Barolo wines: They are the true children of their soil; and this 2010 Riserva Monfortino is a sterling tribute to that notion.

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a perfect wine and there are few things I am more sure of in this life. This is an extraordinary creation that bursts from the glass with a level of distinct intensity and elegance that is nothing short of breathtaking. The wine literally evokes an emotional and deeply visceral reaction thanks to the lasting impression it makes on your heart, mind and gut. This Barolo opens to a delicate garnet color that is brightened with crystalline luminosity. The bouquet offers an immediate curtain-raiser with chiseled aromas of wild berry, licorice, white truffle and tar. That explosive start is followed by a mounting crescendo of complexity and nuance. The wine is extremely silky and polished in terms of mouthfeel and this helps to underline its impressive persistence. Bravo!
