2013 Hermitage Blanc from Jean-Louis Chave, Rhône

In the sphere of definitive Rhône wines, the 2013 Hermitage Blanc from Jean-Louis Chave emerges as a remarkable testament to the maestro's skill and the exceptional climate conditions of this vintage year. Chave, a distinguished name steeped in wine-making wizardry since 1481, has crafted a compelling narrative with this radiant Blanc.

A Vintage of Elegance and Endurance

The saga of the 2013 vintage in Rhône is one of patience and perfection. After the challenges posed by a cold and extended winter, an engaging summer unfolded bestowing elegantly mature grapes in October. This is reflected in the Chave Hermitage Blanc 2013, making it a distinctive addition to any discerning investor’s portfolio.

With its compelling mix of Marsanne and Roussanne, the wine engages with a savory expression that bobs and weaves between floral notes and nuanced minerality. An unforgettable palate experience is ensured with rich stone fruit flavours amalgamating miraculously with subtle undertones of sweet spice and beeswax.

Rhône Radiance Meets Exceptional Complexity

Unraveling over time, the 2013 Hermitage Blanc offers investors not merely a flavourful wine, but an investment adventure. Beneath its golden hue lies a wine that encapsulates both the timeless tradition of Rhône’s winemaking and the distinctiveness of the cool, prolonged 2013 growing season.

The robust structure and refreshing acidity allow this resplendent white to age gracefully, amplifying its value for immediate enjoyment or long-term investment.

The 2013 Hermitage Blanc from Jean-Louis Chave is a testament to the harmonious symbiosis between climatic challenges and human will. Endowed with the magic of the 2013 vintage, this Hermitage Blanc's appeal lies in its ability to exceptionally encapsulate climatic superiority, resulting in an investment-worthy tale of resilience, elegance, and hard-won opulence.

Chave's 2013 Hermitage Blanc had just been bottled prior to my visit. Always 80% to 85% Marsanne and the rest Roussanne, from the lieux-dits of Rocoules, Peleat, L'Hermite and Maison Blanche, it's raised primarily in barrels with a small percentage new. Loaded with notions of buttered citrus, white currants, liquid rock, white flowers and hints of honeysuckle, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, beautiful freshness and purity, and a focused, clean, elegant profile that keeps you coming back to the glass. It lacks the sheer wealth of material found in blockbuster years like 2009 and 2003, yet is perfectly balanced, has loads of richness and a great finish. Give it a year or two and enjoy bottles over the following two decades.
